Thoughts on Social Media

image

The tools in the proverbial communications toolbox just keeping growing. Marketers and business owners have more refined options and in many cases, less expensive choices than ever before in terms of ways to communicate to their intended audiences. The issue in many cases is the actual time to use the tools at all – much less use them properly.

After giving this some thought, I think that going back to the basics is actually the way to maximize tools such as blogs, Internet marketing, Web sites, e-newsletters, Twitter, Linked-In, Facebook and others. By “the basics” I actually mean taking the time to develop a marketing plan for your product or business. While the methods/mediums have evolved, expanded, and are infinitely more sophisticated than in the past, the only way to use any communication tool effectively is to know the following items: which group of your target audience will this tool reach (which also reminds you to think about your target audiences), how frequently should the tool be used, how to use the tool appropriately, know why you are using the particular approach and how to measure the results.

A little thought, research and time on the front end will save time and money on the back end – as well as ensure you know why you are implementing certain marketing strategies and what is working. A plan may help you confirm you should spend money on a Web site, billboards and Internet marketing; it may also help you say “no” with confidence to other options that may not be as effective in reaching your audience.

The bottom line is this: yes, the ways we can communicate have changed – but the concepts of research and planning remains a a solid constant.
