Can't Buy Me Love...

We recently had a client ask how much it would cost for them to appear as the #1 search result on Google for several key words that he had chosen. Now that’s a very good question – and, actually, is a question we pondered here in the office for a few days. After attending a webinar through Hubspot on “Getting Found Online,” the answer proved to be a little grayer than we first imagined.

Unlike traditional paid media, Search Engine Optimization is more about figuring out the best way to put yourself out there than writing a check. Many elements of SEO are virtually free – you just have to understand how consumers look for goods and services on the internet. Knowing that today’s savvy surfer is getting better and better at ignoring interruption-based marketing, you must figure out a way to get them to come to you. Hubspot refers to this as Outbound vs. Inbound Marketing. Ideally, you want to increase the number of consumers coming to you – and you can achieve that through finding appropriate keywords and tagging throughout your site (on your blogs, your photos, your meta-keyword tags etc. etc). In addition to having the magic keywords, you want as many inbound links to your site as possible. The more inbound links you have, the better – each link represents a recommendation that tells the search engine you are reputable.

Incorporating social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) also helps people find you. This is an easy (and again, free) way to get more inbound marketing. Keeping your content fresh is really important, as well – updating your Blog on an at least weekly basis, adding photos (with tags!) and keeping your news releases and calendars up to date can help with this.

Now, there are definitely ways to purchase media that works WITH your SEO. Google Adwords allows you to place ads alongside organic search results which can certainly help in getting traffic to your site. Other Internet Marketing that places your ads only on content-appropriate sites is also an excellent way to keep your name and Web address out there and keeps people clicking through to your site. If you can both beef up your SEO and purchase appropriate Internet Marketing, you are in prime position to show up to those consumers who need and want you.

So, what was our answer to the client who asked how much being the #1 search result on Google would be…? Wouldn’t you like to know.
