Avatar re-release: a poll
Posted on Jul 21, 2010 by Kathryn Nichols
I was pumped when I first heard that Avatar was being re-released in 3D theaters nationwide. I considered watching it on a ten hour plane ride back from France until the nice man sitting next to me informed me it would be a waste to not watch such a movie in 3D. I missed it when it was in the theater and missed it again when I actually had the time to sit for three hours and watch it on the plane… so I definitely plan on seeing it in August. Not to mention, James Cameron is claiming there will be roughly ten minutes of new footage. I’m sure all the Avatar freaks will be rushing to get a good seat at the re-release.
Several designer friends of mine seemed appalled that I had not watched Avatar already, claiming that it was truly an “experience.” Generally, I would roll my eyes at this type of claim, but nonetheless, I still am itching to watch. “Amazing graphics” seemed to be the thing most of my friends were raving about, which as a designer, is what interests me. However, after a conversation with a “non-designer” friend (and critic), his polls seemed to indicate that the movie wasn’t all that… that perhaps the 3D experience wasn’t really anything to write home about.
But, the numbers don’t lie. According to an article on Hollywoodreporter.com, Avatar holds the longest and most lucrative run in Imax history, grossing $2.6 billion worldwide. The dollar amount earned was apparently cut short when Alice in Wonderland was released in 3D, cutting Avatar’s time on the big screen.
So, I am really blogging to poll all you readers. Would you recommend Avatar in 3D or do you too, think its nothing to write home about?
Which seats do you recommend to best “experience” Avatar…. front row? Dead center? Or, on the couch perhaps… ?
Post you response here – let me know what you think!!

I completely enjoyed the 3D experience. Granted, it took me a while to "see" the difference between no D and 3D :-). Worth it though...if only for the incredible graphics, fantastic globalization-riddled story-line and, well, awesome graphics! Go see it!
